. I was walking along the beach on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin when I happened upon a huge tree half buried in the sand. If I turned my head sideways I could imagine its former life, standing upright, towering above the Little Sioux River, crows perching in its branches. Now it lay here on the beach, waves lapping at its sun bleached skin, sea gulls swirling overhead. A good life and a good death.
